Levette Lake Camping | Squamish, BC

My boyfriend and I decided to go for a little weekend camping trip to his favourite spot, Levette Lake. We left work early to get a headstart on our getaway. It was a beautiful and hot Friday, but I got a wee bit carsick on the drive, since the highway between Vancouver and Squamish is super windy. Then to reach the campground you have to drive up a steep, rocky, and very bumpy logging road.

In the past Levette Lake was a free and unregulated spot, so that was what we were expecting. However, when we got there we discovered that as of June 1, it is now a pay campground! $13 a night, and camping/fires only in specific spots, so that really limited the number of people. Unfortunately for us, the campground was fully booked and a strict ranger was patrolling. We were very disappointed. Cody’s truck got a little beat up on the road coming up, and we didn’t want to have to turn around and find somewhere else to stay on a Friday night (or go home).

Luckily, we found a nice group that let us set up our tent on the corner of their campsite. It was a nice little spot with a big log between us and the group for a bit of privacy, but we didn’t have a fire pit so we couldn’t have our own fire. I was tired and grumpy by this point, and I’m ashamed of how moody I was being for not getting what we were expecting, especially since Cody went to so much work to get us there. I just couldn’t shake my bad mood for most of the night. He was trying so hard to make me happy, but I was being awful. He’s truly a great guy for putting up with me! Love him tons for always going out of his way to make all our trips special and amazing.

After we set up our tent we took our floaties out onto the lake. It was beautiful with the sun setting behind the snow-covered mountains. The water was warm from the hot sun all day, and it felt so surreal to be swimming in sight of snow! I ate a sandwich and had a drink while floating on the lake; it was dreamy.

Once the sun went down we changed into some warmer clothes and just listened to music and talked. We set up some chairs by the lakefront and watched the stars. Away from the city the sky was bright with stars. It was so magical.

We had a surprisingly good sleep in the tent. Our air mattress was comfortable and we were cozy underneath a couple sleeping bags. For breakfast we had cereal with blueberries right on the lakeshore. We read Peter Pan together and had a relaxing morning. It was lovely despite it being windy and chilly.

Cody grilled burgers for lunch and they really hit the spot. Afterward we got all sunscreened up and went for another float on the lake. It was so windy that our floaties were getting pulled in every direction, and we kept having to paddle with our hands to get back on track. Eventually we collided with a group that had their floaties all roped together and anchored down. We roped ourselves to them and hung out for a bit.

We made hot dogs for dinner and spent the evening watching the stars again. Despite the camping trip not being exactly what I was hoping for, I still had a great time. Levette Lake is just shockingly beautiful, and a really fun summer spot. However, next time we’ll have to go earlier in the week to grab one of the prime campsites.
